planet and biology.
i'm still working on those points. until now, the main source of inspiration and information has been geoff's excellent page about planet-construction.
varu guys live on a rocky planet, non too different from earth (a bit denser and a bit more little), orbiting around an "A5" star somewhere in Ophiucus constellation. Ninety percent of its surface is covered by water, so just a little continent exists, plus some islands here and there. The main continent is as big as "one Australia and an half", more or less. Here's a picture.
as for varus' biology, they can be breifly described as giant anthropomorph insects. about 150 cms tall, they have an hard exoskeleton, they use to decorate with engravings. here's a sketch of one of them:
